We hit the National Zoo on Friday after lunch, 5 adults with a 2 year old in tow. As cousin L pointed out, it's usually better to see the animals in the morning while the people are away and the animals are awake, active and hungry. Nevertheless, we saw the elephants, pandas, lions and tigers before the munchkin (and his "Poppy") started getting tired for the day. This panda (I'm not sure which one it is) was chowing down on lunch inside the panda exhibit, behinds glass walls.
Precious animals: one of the pandas outside seemed to be playing with his crowd of admirers, at one point turning around and scratching his bum for all the kids to see. Something rather funny about a mob of kids all saying, "MOM!!! He's scratching his butt!!!" all at the same time. Ain't nature grand. :-)
Signage: Needed some help on this one. Yes, there were signs posted all over the place that pointed you in the general direction of a group of animals. But, signs would have been better served with pictures of the animals (consider the audience), more signs to the vitals (bathrooms, food, water, lost children services), and more overall maps of the park.
I've forgotten how much fun the zoo can be. This one especially and right smack in the middle of d.c.
